I was thrilled to appear on Who Do You Think You Are with the amazing actor and singer Will Young. We talked about his grandfather, Digby and his time as a Prisoner of War in Stalag Luft III in Poland.
I’d always wanted to visit the POW camp famous as the setting for The Great Escape. The programme gave me the opportunity to see the camp for myself and inspired me to work on a new edition of my book, The Barbed-Wire University.
The new edition includes a substantial afterword in which I describe my impressions of Stalag Luft III. I look at how our views of POWs have changed and the new stories I’ve unearthed in the 14 years since I first researched the subject.
